Life mimicking art: A scene that more readily belongs in Rand's Atlas Shrugged played out in Birmingham, AL, thanks to a bunch of environmentalist wackos.

He is absolutely right, and good for him for saying something. More people need to.

I still fail to understand why all the individuals being demonized, the producers and employers, don't start organizing to educate the American people on what's going on. Companies, too.

Why do producers and companies not attempt to educate the cud-chewing masses? Two reasons: the producers are busy producing and they know that no matter what they say, the cud-chewing masses will just continue to chew their cud. It would be, as Jesus said, "casting pearls before swine."

Your comment does remind me of my thoughts when Verizon and AT&T were bellyaching about how much Obamacare was going to cost them. My first thought was, "Why not run ads on TV telling the American people what the President did and why their rates are going to increase dramatically." What a teachable moment that would have been! The boy king would have been given a lesson in who really makes the country work. Sadly, all we've gotten is a full page ad in the New York Times by Cesna and Amazon telling California to go screw a bigger dope.

I think there is another reason why producers don't attempt to educate: fear of reprisal.

Wow. That story was really depressing. It appears that the environmentalists at the meeting see the mine owner not as a human being, but as a cartoonish villain straight out of Captain Planet or Erin Brokovich. Do they honestly think that business owners WANT to pollute the water in their own communities and give cancer to innocent people!? Do they think that chasing out a man who was about to provide 100+ well-paying jobs (with full benefits!) to the struggling populace is helping anybody?

And I'll bet that none of the people opposing the mine at that meeting were doctors or scientists either. Seriously, how the hell does losing a family member to cancer make one an expert on coal mines and pollution? By that logic, the fact that my mother had lung cancer makes me an expert oncologist AND a qualified expert on the effects of cigarette smoke on the environment and the human body. Sure, I never actually studied the subject. But I have a sob story about my mom! Surely that trumps silly things like facts and reason!

Shut up, slave!

Yes. Stupid question, you stupid slave.

Do they think that chasing out a man who was about to provide 100+ well-paying jobs (with full benefits!) to the struggling populace is helping anybody?
Yes. The government will continue to fund entitlement projects at the expense of this entrepreneur sans a money-making opportunity for him in the mines. Yet another stupid slave question.

And I'll bet that none of the people opposing the mine at that meeting were doctors or scientists either.
The article didn't say, but don't think they wouldn't be any. While to be a scientist, you have to be intellectually honest, admit when you're wrong and yield to the cold truth even when it stands in your way politically, you need not do any of these things if you're a poser who's in it only for themselves, damn the cost to anyone else.

Seriously, how the hell does losing a family member to cancer make one an expert on coal mines and pollution?
How dare you question their credentials! Know your place, slave!

By that logic, the fact that my mother had lung cancer makes me an expert oncologist AND a qualified expert on the effects of cigarette smoke on the environment and the human body.
No, it doesn't. You're one of those oppressed conservative women, not an enlightened liberal. Stupid slave.

Sure, I never actually studied the subject. But I have a sob story about my mom! Surely that trumps silly things like facts and reason!
See previous response, stupid slave.

Perhaps. Or perhaps he really is Ellis Wyatt in the flesh: tired of fighting the very people who will benefit from legalized theft (taxes) of his wealth.

Bending like Gumby to satisfy regulators, scorners and political hacks is no way to do business at all. Free men should do business standing upright.

Sounds like a businessman that doesn't have the chops to do business there. Someone else, with a bit more will, may step in instead.

To me, he sounds like a businessman who won't tolerate being abused by the people he's trying to help.
Think about it. Would YOU want to undergo the financial risk of starting up a new business in a climate full of people that treat you like a monster intent on poisoning their families? The taxes and environmental regulations are enough of a headache. I know I wouldn't want to deal with character assassination on top of it!

If another businessperson has the will to open a coal mine there, God bless them. But I doubt anyone else will want to try after seeing what this guy endured.
