|Affirmative Action Bake Sale

This news is a little old. But it's worth posting because of Zombie's fabulous photo-journalism on the recent one in Berkley. First, here's the video s/he (not sure about the reporter's gender) made to summarize the event:
It's fun to note how articulate the Berkeley College Republicans are in comparison to the people opposing them. They clearly state the reason for the pricing structure and the point they're trying to make. While the liberals protesting/harassing them just scream about racism/homophobia/privilege/sexism/slavery/whatever without ever explaining why the College Republicans' points are invalid.
I also want to add that these kids have the most enormous cajones EVER. To be an out-of-the-closet conservative at a college in Berkeley in tantamount to being an out-of-the-closet homosexual in a Muslim country. I don't know how they do it.
Here's a link to the text article (with TONS of great pictures).
Don't you just love the double standards at play here? Berkeley regularly has "Pro-Palestian" rallies on campus that are so packed with anti-Jew imagery and rhetoric they're indistinguishable from neo-NAZI rallies. But a few Republicans use mild satire to make the point that "it's wrong to discriminate against people based on race" and the whole campus loses it's collective mind. It would be amusing if it wasn't so sad.
That was a really awesome video. I especially liked the guy at the end. I'll have to read Zombie's take on the whole event later. :3 Thanks for sharing!
The satire went right over the heads of the browns in my Japanese history class (that's where I first heard about it), because when they brought it up I don't think they mentioned which way the price differences were skewed, just that whites paid a different price and browns all paid different prices and women paid something else. AND OMG IT WAS JUST SOOOO RACIST. I wasn't sure what to think of it until I read the whole story, and then I wished we'd had that bake sale at my campus :((((( Pay mah $1.50 for a cupcake X3
That sounded a lot worse than I'd meant it - The satire went right over the heads of the obviously liberal "under privileged" classmates who then reported the story to me with heavy omission of info, though arguably they heard the story second-hand first.
I highly recommend checking out Zombie's site when you have the time. S/he has done dozens of reports on protests like this (mostly in the San Fran area) and they're all amazing.
The thing that gets to me about Affirmative Action is this: it's said that affirmative action exists to right historical wrongs against minorities in this country. But Asians (the one group that was thrown in INTERNMENT CAMPS not too long ago) is the group that gets screwed over the most by it.
As someone who grew up broke and dropped out of college for a while to work and support my family; I'm all for affirmative action based on FINANCIAL need. But the racial bias is just wrong; both legally AND morally.
Oh dude I've been following Zombie's blog for a while XD I only just recently found out s/he wrote for Pajamawhatever. It was cool seeing the articles go from kinda liberal to moderate and now suddenly BOOM Semi conservative libertarian.
Asians don't need help. They're smart and have light skin and nobody made them slaves and so it's okay to treat them like they're white. DUH. Don't you know anything?????
And you're just saying that because you have that white privilege and and and nobody oppressed you and and and your ancestors weren't slaves and and and you don't need help making it in this world run by old rich white men!!!!1111eleven
Glad the guy in the video at 4:30 with the mega-phone who wouldn't shut up acknowledged that it's only racism unless you're personally getting something out of it. Morons.
I actually held an affirmative action bake sale at Evergreen State College in 2002. It DID NOT go over well.
